Introduction/Home

Each of these exercises is designed to help you learn the location of the various keys on the steno keyboard.  There are no words, just individual letter-sounds represented by a single key.

You will need turn off the "user" and "main" dictionaries in Plover.  To do this, open Plover then UNCHECK the box next to the "user.json" and "main.json" dictionaries.  Leave a check in the box next to "commands.json".  If you happen to have other dictionaries installed, uncheck any and all of them also.  You want only the "commands.json" dictionary active.

Each page has two versions of the exercise:

  1. FreeText:  An open text box for you to write in while listening to the recorded dictation.  The recordings are dictated at 20 "words" per minute; you can adjust the speed to be faster or slower as desired. (You can also write in an external program then copy/paste into this box to check your work.)
  2. Steno-Jig:  Each letter-sound is displayed and there is a steno keyboard that highlights which key to press.  The Steno-Jig enabled versions are randomized so that each time you run the drill, the letters are randomized.
It's your choice which version you practice with but it is recommended to practice using both systems and to practice as often as possible to recorded dictation.

If it seems like its harder to write single letters than small words, you are right!

If you prefer drilling outside of the StudySteno system, you can also do these keyboard drills in StenoJig directly by clicking this link: http://studysteno.com/stenojig/learn-keyboard.html
